Calls To Worship

God

Adapted from Exodus 3:1-6

Pastor: Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.

All: He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”

Pastor: When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”

All: And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Adapted from Nehemiah 9:6

You alone are the Lord.

You made the heavens, even the highest heavens.

And all their starry host, the earth and all that is in it,

The seas and all that is in them.

You give life to everything,

And the multitudes of heaven worship you.

Let us join with them and worship God’s name!

Austin D. Hill

Adapted from Psalm 8

Leader: Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

People: You have set your glory in the heavens.

Leader: Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies to silence the foe and the avenger.

People: When I consider your heavens,
 the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

Leader: You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:

People: all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas

Leader: Lord, our Lord,

People: How majestic is your name in all the earth!

Adapted from Psalm 23

Leader: The Lord is our shepherd.

People: All our needs will be met. God provides a place and time for deep rest and restoration. God leads us beside still waters; restores our souls and leads us in right paths. We do not need to be afraid; for God is with us; now and forever.

Leader: Such faith calls for some singing!

Adapted from Psalm 36:5-8

Leader:            Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,

                          Your faithfulness to the clouds.

People:           How precious is your steadfast love O God!

All people take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Leader:            They feast on the abundance of your house,

And you give them drinks from the river of your delights.

People:          For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

All:                  Let us worship God!

Adapted from Psalm 36:5-7

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,

Your faithfulness to the skies.

Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,

Your justice like the great deep.

You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!

People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

We celebrate your incredible love today.

Adapted from Psalm 90:1-4

Leader: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

All: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Leader: You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!”

All: For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

Adapted from Psalm 139:1-6

O Lord, your have searched me, and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise.

You perceive my thoughts from afar.

You are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue,

You Lord, know it completely.

Such knowledge is too wonderful, too lofty.

We are in awe of you. All we can do is offer our worship and praise.

Adapted from Psalm 139

How precious are your thoughts, O Lord?!

How vast, the sum of them!

Were we to count them,

They would outnumber the grains of sand.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts.

Test us, and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting.

Adapted from Isaiah 40:28-31

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary.

And his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

So let us praise God together today.

Adapted from Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Come let us worship the Lord!

Adapted from Ezekiel 34:11-16

Leader:          This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.”

People:         As shepherds look after their scattered flocks when they are with them,

So will the Lord look after God’s sheep.

Leader:            “I will tend them in good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land.”

People:          God will be the one to tend God’s sheep and to search for the lost.

God will bring back the strays and strengthen the weak.

All:                  Let us worship God!

Adapted from 1 John 4:7-15

“Dear friends,

Let us love one another, for love comes from God.

Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God…. This is love:

Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

“God is love.

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” God, please help us to experience your love today so we can embody it for others as we go forth from here.

Eternal and Beautiful God,
The One who births us and names us
Grant us perspective
A holy centering of truth, humility, and our belovedness

Not too high that we fall away from you
our need of you
our need of others

Not too low that we fail to trust
to reach out for you
to reach out with you

In you, with you, for you we are
humble and powerful
unique and alike
common and regal
priceless and dust

Grant us perspective, Merciful One
A holy centering
Let no voice be too loud or too soft
So we may persevere in faith, in hope, in following, in becoming
Amen

Adapted from Psalm 42

Leader:  As the deer pants for streams of water,

So my soul pants for you, oh God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When can I go and meet with God?

People: My tears have been my food day and night,

While men say to me all day long,

                “Where is your God?”

These things I remember as I pour out my soul:

how I used to go with the multitude,

leading the procession to the house of God

with shouts of joy and thanksgiving

                 among the festive throng.

Leader:  Why are you downcast, O my soul?

                Why so disturbed within me?

                Put your hope in God,

for I will yet praise him,

                my Savior and my God.

Leader:            Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,

Who was, and is, and is to come.

People:           Your are worthy, our Lord and God

To receive glory and honor and power.

Leader:            For you created all things, and by your will

They were created and have their being.

Bud Thoreen

Leader:        Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

People:       Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;

Leader:        Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

People:       All thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea

Leader:        Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

People:       God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

All:              Let us worship God!

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Sanctus, The Book of Common Prayer

Adapted from 1 Samuel 2:1-10*

My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.

 “There is no one holy like the Lord;
    there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.

 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
    he humbles and he exalts.

The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Wonderful Counselor, open our ears

So we may hear your song

God is with us, God is near

Mighty God, open our eyes

So we may see you at work

For goodness, truth, and justice

Everlasting Father, open our hearts

So we may release our worry,

Our loneliness, and our striving

Prince of Peace, open our hands

So we may take yours and each other’s

And walk together the path of grace

Amen

People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?

Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false and do not swear deceitfully. Lift up your heads, O gates! that the King of glory may come in!

People: Who is the King of glory?

Leader: The Lord, strong and mighty, he is the King of glory.

Based on Isaiah 55

“Come,” says the Lord. “All you who are thirsty, come to the waters.”

“Come. Here there is bread and wine for your soul.”

“Come,” says the Lord, “come be my people, and I will be your God.”

We are your people. You are our God. Come, let us walk in the way of the Lord!  Let us worship God!
