Prayers of Invocation on Knowing God

Prayers of Confession on Knowing God

Almighty and Everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being, who has created us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they find rest in you, grant to us purity of heart and strength of purpose so that no selfish desire may hinder us from knowing your will, and no weakness from doing it. In your light may we see life clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom. For your mercy’s sake. Amen.

Almighty God, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see; grant that we may know you in him whom you have given to be the light of the world, our Savior Jesus Christ, and in the joy of his gospel we may worship you in spirit and in truth. Amen.

Hugh Cameron, Language modernized by Stuart Strachan Jr.

Almighty God, who has given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common requests to you; and does promise that where two or three are gathered together in your name you will grant their requests; fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of your servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

John Chrysostom

Almighty and most merciful God, you have given the Bible to be the revelation of your great love to us, and of your power and will to save us: grant that our study of it may not be made in vain by the callousness or carelessness of our hearts, but that by it we may be confirmed in penitence, lifted to hope, made strong for service, and, above all, filled with the true knowledge of yourself and of your Son Jesus Christ.

George Adam Smith

God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul.  Pour out upon us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that, being taught by you in Holy Scripture, our hearts and minds may be opened to know the things that pertain to life and holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
