Prayers of Confession on Steadfast Love

Adapted from Psalm 25:6-7, 11, 16-18

All: Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! For your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.

Adapted from Psalm 115

Pastor: “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!”

All: Yet because of the sin in our hearts, we have strayed far from you. We have disobeyed your commandments, we have trusted our own judgement, and we wonder why we feel distant from you.

Pastor: We have worshipped idols of silver and gold—really idols of self and comfort. These have no power, these have no soul, these have no life. “Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.”

All: Forgive us, gracious God, for not loving you as we ought, for not obeying you as we were taught, and for not trusting that our forgiveness has been bought.

Father God, You alone are holy. We revere You as our one true God. Your name is higher than any other name. However, we confess that we can use that Name frivolously, without concern for its supremacy. Lord, please forgive us for those times that we neglect to give You the honor that You are due. Help us to walk faithfully in a manner that shows our respect for Your holiness. We pray this humbly in the name of Jesus, Your Son.  Amen.

Steadfast, ever faithful God, you are always with us. Day in and day out, you provide for us, you show us your grace, you inspire awe within us as we experience your goodness. But almighty God, our memory is so short! We forget your great acts of goodness and desire more signs from you. Lord, remind us of your power today. Revive within us a sense of gratitude for who you are and what you do as we silently confess our lack of contentment to you…

Gracious God, Your love for us is unending, unconditional and unfailing. Even when we wander from Your loving arms, Your steadfast love for us is constant. Our love for You can be fickle and feckless. We wander away into the arms of lust, idolatry, and temporary happiness. You know that we will be unfaithful, but You continue to love us and call us Your own. Forgive us for our wayward hearts, our sinful nature and our failure to remain loyal. Thank You for the forgiveness You extend through Jesus. Cleanse our souls and reconcile us back into Your loving arms. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
