Prayers of Confession on Lukewarm

Adapted from Revelation 3:15-22

Pastor: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation: “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

All: For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.

Pastor: Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

All: He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Kind and loving God, forgive us for our lack of faith. You deserve our reverence, obedience, and faith, but we give You so much less. Because of our lukewarm devotion, we miss out on so much that You have for us. Please forgive us for all the times when we’ve not placed our trust in You as we silently confess our sins to You now…

How quickly our loyalties fade, oh God. We proclaim you are our Lord, but lives do not reflect that truth. We pay you homage when it’s easy, but live our own way when we feel like it. We praise you today and forget you tomorrow. Lord, please forgive us for our tepid faith, and kindle the fires of passion within us to follow you even when it’s costly. We come to you, silently confessing our sins now.

Time of silent reflection.

O God, we think we love You well on many occasions, but the truth is our love for You is diluted and weak. Our hearts are divided, and our passion for Your Kingdom half-hearted. Our trust in You seems pure only for brief moments. Our affections are drawn away too quickly, and our devotion to You dies far too easily. Forgive us. In Your deep mercy, rekindle our love for You as we see anew Jesus’ love for us. In His name we pray. Amen.

Gracious God, we don’t live as Christ did. Although You give us specific instructions for an ordered way of life that stands out from the rest of the world, we settle for lukewarm Christianity. Our lives reflect our culture and we don’t transform it. Please help us to be more obedient as we silently confess our sins to You now…

Holy God, we confess that we have been lukewarm about living our faith in Jesus each day. We put off to tomorrow what we know in our hearts you want to happen today. We go through the motions of religion without having our hearts utterly transformed by your presence. Forgive us, and help us to rekindle our faith into something useful and beautiful. Amen.
