Calls To Worship

Righteousness

Adapted from Psalm 11:4-7

Pastor: The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.

All: The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.

Pastor: Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.

All: For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.

Adapted from Psalm 36:5-6

Your steadfast love, O Lord,

Extends to the heavens,

Your faithfulness to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,

Your judgments are like the great deep;

You save all of creation, O Lord. So please help us to depend fully upon you.

Adapted from Psalm 71

Leader: I come praising the mighty deeds of the Lord God, I will praise Your righteousness, Yours alone.

People: O God, from my youth You have taught me, and I still proclaim Your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim Your might to all the generations to come. Your power and Your righteousness, O God, reach the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like You? My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; my soul also, which You have rescued.

Leader: O God, who is like You? Let our lips shout for joy, let us sing our praises to You.

Adapted from Psalm 103 (NRSVUE)

Leader: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits —”

People: “As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear Him. For He knows how we were made; He remembers that we are dust. As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.”

Leader: “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep His covenant and remember to do His commandments.” Let us bless the Lord, with all we have within us, let us bless His holy name.

(Ps 103:1-2, 13-18, NRSVUE, adapted for liturgical use)

 Adapted from Psalm 119

Your word is a lamp unto my feet

And a light unto my path.

I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again:

I will obey your righteous regulations.

Lord, accept my offering of praise,

Teach me your regulations.

Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight.

We are determined to keep your decrees to the very end.

Adapted from Psalm 119:1-5

Leader: Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.

People: Happy are those who keep God’s decrees, who seek God with their whole heart.

Leader: Happy are we, when we do no wrong and walk in God’s ways.

People: O that our ways may be steadfast in keeping your commandments, O Lord.

All: Let us worship God!

 Adapted from Psalm 119

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,

Who walk according to the law of the Lord.

Blessed are those who keep his statutes,

And seek God with all their heart.

We will praise you with upright hearts,

As we learn your righteous laws.

Adapted from Psalm 119:5-7

Oh, that my ways were steadfast

In obeying your decrees!

Then I would not be put to shame

When I consider all your commands.

We will praise you with an upright heart

As we learn your righteous laws.

Let us open our hearts to your guidance, oh God, as we worship you.

Adapted from Psalm 146:5-10

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord their God.

He is the Maker of heaven and earth,

The sea, and everything in them—

He remains faithful forever.

He upholds the cause of the oppressed

And gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets prisoners free,

The Lord gives sight to the blind,

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,

The Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the foreigner

And sustains the fatherless and the widow,

But he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

The Lord reigns forever.

So humble us, O Lord, we pray as we gather to worship you.

Adapted from Romans 3:10-18

Pastor: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

All: Oh God, I hate to hear it, hate to know it, hate to say it: I am a sinner! I need you to forgive my sin. Please forgive me and love me like you love your Son, Jesus Christ. Make me a new person. Help me love you.

Adapted from Romans 5:6-82 & Corinthians 5:21

Leader: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

People: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

He will judge the people with righteousness and defend the cause of the poor.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

The mystery of the ages is revealed; the eternal plane of God is known to all.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Let us kneel down before him to give him honor, glory, and praise.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Let us offer him all the treasures of our hearts and our lives.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
