Calls To Worship

Poverty

Adapted from Psalm 9

Leader:            The Lord reigns forever, and rules the nations with fairness.

People:          The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

Leader:           Sing praises to the Lord who reigns in Jerusalem;

                         Tell the world about God’s unforgettable deeds.

People:         The needy will not be ignored forever;

                       The hopes of the poor will not always be crushed.

All:                 Let us worship God!

Pastor: I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

All: I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

Pastor: The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

All: And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Adapted from Psalm 147

Leader: How good it is to sing praises to our God!

People: Great are You, Lord and mighty in power. You understand everything about each one of us. You heal the brokenhearted and bind up our wounds. You sustain the humble and delight in those who hold You in awe and put their hope in Your endless love.

Leader: Blessed are those who rely on God, who hope in God alone,

People: You uphold the cause of the oppressed and give food to the hungry. You set prisoners free, You give sight to the blind. You lift up those who are bowed down and broken. You watch over the ones who are new among us and sustain the fatherless and the widow.

Leader: Lord, show us this morning Your sufficiency, Your abundance, Your outstretched arms and our deep need to be infused and enthused with your Holy Spirit.

Adapted from Isaiah 25:1, 3-4, 9

Pastor: O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.

All: Therefore, strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you.

Pastor: For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.

All: Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Leader: As Jesus began his earthly ministry, he said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”

People: Through the Holy Spirit, we too have been anointed to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Leader: May we bring good news to the poor, as ministers of Christ Jesus.

People: Come, Let us Worship the Lord!

Adapted from Luke 4:18-19

Jesus says to us,

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

Because he has anointed me

To proclaim good news to the poor.

he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

And recovery of sight for the blind,

To set the oppressed free,

To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
