Calls To Worship

Longing

Adapted from Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;

My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather be the doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.

Adapted from Psalm 84: 1, 2, 4, 5

Leader: How lovely is your dwelling place,

O Lord Almighty!

People: My soul yearns, even faints,

for the courts of the Lord;

My heart and flesh cry out

for the living God.

Leader: Blessed are those who dwell in your house

They are ever praising you.

People: Blessed are those whose strength is in you,

Who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

Psalm 84:1-2; 11-12

Leader: How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! Our [souls] long, yes, faint for the courts of the Lord; [our] hearts and flesh sing to the living God.

People: For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Leader: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!

We come to this place seeking something …

    something better than ourselves;

   something that gives life meaning;

   some relationship that reaches deep into

      our souls to fulfill us;

   maybe even something to which we cannot put a name.

But we come seeking …

and even more important, we are sought by one who gives us

worth and meaning and value and love.

So, today, let us enter into this time of worship with hearts and minds

that are open to the one who has laid down his life for us,

who stands at the throne of God in support of us, and who reigns

in power for us. Come, let us worship.

Heather A. Hood, “Call to Worship,” in Brad Berglund Ed., Reinventing Worship: Prayers, Readings, Special Services and More.

God, you are my God. I earnestly seek you.

I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
I have seen you in your sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will life up my hands.

I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
